All ages

Celebrating its 22nd season, Bowen McCauley Dance (BMD) has shared the joy of dance with diverse audiences providing inventive and vibrant choreography – a fusion of contemporary and classical techniques set to a sweeping range of musical styles. Showcasing founding Artistic Director Lucy Bowen McCauley’s choreography, our award-winning professional company is renowned for the athleticism of our dancers, use of live music, the professionalism of its dance performances and its extraordinary outreach programs for diverse communities. Ranging from free family-friendly programs to ticketed concerts, BMD performs regularly throughout Virginia, Maryland and the greater DC area. Washingtonian magazine recognized BMD as “one of the area’s best dance troupes” and McCauley as among the “top men and women who have helped transform Washington into one of the nation’s liveliest centers for the performing arts.” See why BMD is “DC premier contemporary dance company.” – The Washington Post.

Student performances range from 45 minutes to 90 minutes and are appropriate for all ages. First, a leap into ’Carnival of the Animals’, with music by Saint -Saenz, poetry by Ogden Nash and narrated by Noel Coward. Lucy has developed the humorous poems into a performance that is full of animated characters and inventive choreography. Next a dazzling quartet of the historical and charming Charleston dance/1920’s jazz music era, with a vibrant dance energy, specific timing, partnered relationships, strong line, and shape. Look then to a lovely duet (or pas de deux) ‘Far Behind’, showcased from Lucy’s collaboration with the contemporary country music band, ‘Jason and the Scorchers’. Finally, the BMD dancers will energize the stage with Dancing Through the Decades. A bopping, twirling ride through the past 50 years of music including our new twist on HIP HOP, with the inspiration of the Broadway smash, Hamilton. An American hit musical, Hamilton is about the life of Alexander Hamilton, with music, lyrics and book by Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Touring performance repertoire is extensive with more than 20 award-winning pieces that BMD takes on tour. Our touring repertoire includes: Le Café Carambole with music by Paul Schoenfield, Le Sacre du Printemps (Right of Spring) with music by Igor Stravinsky; Time and Clouds with music by Wolfgang Seierl, Thermal Pearl Ascending and more.

Educational Programs

Educational programs can be tailored to the specific needs of the presenter, including university dance programs, primary and secondary schools, and community groups.

Programs include:

Mini Performances (45-60 minutes, appropriate for all ages): BMD’s engaging miniperformances and lectures provide participants additional opportunities to enjoy contemporary dance and discover how choreographers create, how dance is integrated with other art forms, and the importance of dance to human experience.

Workshop/Master Class (1-3 hours, appropriate for all ages): Classes are typically taught by Lucy Bowen McCauley or other key company members and feature age-appropriate warm-up exercises and floor-work from the company repertoire.

Residencies (Multi-day, one week or multi-session): BMD’s customized residencies (3- 10 days) feature professional instruction in ballet-based contemporary dance. Culminating performances include student or BMD choreography. Arts-integrated, SOLsupported, educational residencies are also available. Stretch Class (75 minutes): Bowen McCauley Stretch is a unique stretch technique pioneered by Lucy Bowen McCauley and has been featured in USA Today, Dance Teacher, and The Washington Post. It is ideal for dancers, athletes, and anyone wishing to increase flexibility, range of motion, and muscle strength. For three years, 2003-2006, McCauley used her stretch technique as coach for USA Gymnastics, working with Olympic notables, Dominique Dawes, Courtney Kupets, and Elise Ray.

Workshops / Classes / Residencies

McCauley and dancers provide stimulating warm-up exercises and floor-work that includes excerpts from the BMD repertoire.
