IONA, an award winning, traditional pan Celtic band founded in 1986, represents the music of parent cultures (Scottish, Irish, Welsh, Cornish, Manx, Breton, Galician, Asturian) and their evolution in America (Appalachian, Cajun, Cape Breton, Quebecois). The band weaves Celtic knots with songs in their original languages, traditional instrumentation, percussion, including footwork, and anecdotes.
IONA conducts an entertaining and knowledgeable tour of the Celtic lands. Exponents of fiddle, Irish flute, whistles, guitar, bouzouki, bodhran, doumbek, bass guitar, and foot work, as well as song and language, IONA entertains with instructive humor. At most venues, the band teaches and leads a Breton dance.
IONA explains the culture, music, and dance of Celts worldwide; paths of immigration, linguistic relationships, design and musical traditions. Band members demonstrate their instruments, types of music, and dance. Students join dances, choruses, rhythms.
Band members lead workshops in: musical techniques of their various instruments; singing styles; dance steps; and overview of the Celtic diaspora.
