About

The Tidewater Guitar Orchestra (TGO) is an ensemble of more than a dozen accomplished guitarists who use the lush timbral resources of different sized guitars to explore a rich repertoire ranging from Bach to Bartok. TGO is composed of classical guitars, requintos (soprano guitars tuned a fifth higher) and bajas (baritone guitars tuned a fourth lower).

One of the only orchestras of its kind in North America, TGO represented the United States at the International Guitar Festival in Costa Rica in 1999 and has made numerous appearances in Virginia.

Press Quotes, Tidewater Guitar Orchestra

“…this was a gorgeous sound that emanated from Roper’s stage, with a striking range of colors.” Virginian Pilot

“In addition to providing top quality musical entertainment, wonderfully amusing commentary is frequently offered by director Sam Dorsey.” Eastern Shore News

“While the selections were played with sensitivity and precision, the truly noteworthy mention is due to the very fine, professional, and polished arrangements…(of TGO members; Boyles& Cudney).” Hearsay Forum

Tidewater Guitar Orchestra members John Boyles, Sam Dorsey, Todd Holcomb and Cliff Morris have recently come together to examine the literature written for the standard guitar quartet in addition to compositions from the rich repertoire of the guitar orchestra . The Tidewater Guitar Quartet has focused especially on performing Spanish music and also more contemporary quartet music by Andrew York and Leo Brouwer.
