Tyler Hughes presents the living musical traditions of Southwest Virginia in the Appalachian Mountains. An award-winning banjoist and dancer, his musical abilities paired with an extensive historical knowledge of the songs and tunes make for a highly entertaining and informative concert or workshop. Hughes has lived in Southwest Virginia since birth, but has travelled internationally studying and performing. His performances include old and new songs that paint an accurate portrayal of life in the Appalachian region.
Tyler Hughes’ performances contain various musical examples from the Appalachian Mountains. A multi-instrumentalist, he performs on banjo, guitar, autoharp, and dulcimer. Each performance is accompanied with family-friendly tales and true stories about the music’s origins.
Hughes also offers a variety of workshops and master class options. Workshop can feature solo instrumentation i.e., Banjo Styles of Appalachia, Autoharp Styles of Southwest Virginia. Instrument workshops can be tailored for beginner or advanced musicians. Dance workshops include instruction in basic flat-foot dance and beginning square dance. Dance workshops are appropriate for adults or children.
