About

With its unique beginnings during the Great Depression, Barter Theatre, one of the nation's oldest professional non-profit theatres, is located in beautiful historic Abingdon, Virginia. Barter Theatre is a theatre of firsts: one of this nation's first professional regional theatres, the first professional theatre to be designated a state theatre – The State Theatre of Virginia – and more. Today, Barter offers a variety of musicals, classics, comedies, dramas and new southern and Appalachian plays performed February -- December yearly on two stages in Abingdon: Barter Theatre and Barter Stage II. The Barter Players and Encore Players perform at the Theatre and on tour at schools and venues across the country, providing a vibrant and exciting professional theatre experience for students. Barter has a rich touring history having toured the Commonwealth of Virginia for over 50 years.

Performances

The Barter Players – Comprised of young professional actors, The Barter Players present professional theatre primarily focused toward young audiences of all ages and backgrounds. Three different age-appropriate, literature-based productions for students are available for in-school tour performances from January to March.. Innovation, humor, ensemble acting, imagination, and giving voice to new social challenges are the trademarks of The Barter Players. Virginia learning standards are directly tied into each play and are listed in a free companion study guide, available with additional helpful materials at bartertheatre.com. Free actor talkback sessions immediately following performances allow students to interact with the actors and learn more about the art of theatre. Performance workshops for pre-K through college are available to students and teachers immediately following performances. Workshops are adapted to the age level of the students and provide hands-on learning of the same theatrical tools and exercises used by the actors.

The Barter Players Encore Company – For those who want to see a Barter Players show on the big stage, The Barter Players Encore Company presents professional theatre primarily focused toward young audiences, touring in November and December. Comprised of “graduates” of the Barter Players, The Encore Players tour features more complex staging and a more elaborate set than the Barter Players, and is suitable for larger audiences and venues. Virginia learning standards are directly tied into each play and are listed in a free companion study guide, available with additional helpful materials at bartertheatre.com. Workshops

Performance Workshops for pre-K through college are offered to students and teachers immediately following performances. Barter tour workshops provide hands-on learning of the same theatrical tools and exercises used by the Players & Encore. These include the development of acting/speaking skills, vocal productions, sense-memory objectives and storytelling, all with an emphasis on effective collaboration and problem-solving. Exposure to these “insider” theatre skills lets students experience the creativity of building stories with physicality and imagination. Workshops can be further customized to meet teachers’ classroom objectives.
