About

Synetic Theater
SYNthesis: Combining distinct elements to form a whole
KinETIC: Pertaining to or imparting motion: active, dynamic, energetic
SYNETIC: A dynamic synthesis of the arts

History

Synetic Theater emerged from the creative vision of founders Paata and Irina Tsikurishvili, Georgian artists who moved to the United States in the 1990s. Trained in dance, theatre and film, the Tsikurishvilis combine traditions of the Caucasus with distinctly American styles to tell classic stories through movement, music, technology and visual arts.

Synetic Theater was founded in 2001 and made its artistic debut with the first wordless Shakespeare production, Hamlet…the rest is silence, thrilling audiences with its athletic and high-voltage physical theatre. Synetic’s innovative take on Hamlet earned three Helen Hayes Awards – for Outstanding Resident Play, Outstanding Choreography and Outstanding Director. Synetic would go on to win dozens more Helen Hayes Awards with over 100 nominations to date, recognition from the American Theatre Wing as an emerging theatre company to watch, and the honor of “Washingtonians of the Year” from Washingtonian Magazine for co-founders Paata and Irina Tsikurishvili.

Synetic Theater has a robust Education and Outreach department that serves thousands of students throughout the DMV with touring performances, workshops, and residencies!

Performances

Mainstage Touring Productions:
Hamlet…The Rest is Silence - In 2002, Synetic Theater appeared on the Washington, DC theater scene with Hamlet…The Rest is Silence, a production which garnered international attention. This stark, brooding and often grotesquely humorous production brings the Prince of Denmark to life. Featuring remarkable mime and impressionistic choreography, scenes such as the drowning of Ophelia and the famous “To be or not to be” soliloquy are manifested using nothing but the bodies of the Synetic ensemble, minimalistic set and costumes, and the resounding score of Giya Kancheli. This is a wordless production and runs for 90 minutes without intermission.

Cyrano de Bergerac - A brilliant poet and soldier, Cyrano de Bergerac apparently has it all—except the confidence to win the heart of his beloved Roxane. Lacking traditional good looks and the ability to truly “fit in”, Cyrano partners with his handsome friend Christian, also in love with Roxane but lacking Cyrano’s way with words. Together, the two make a formidable suitor as Cyrano expresses his true feelings for Roxane in the only we he feels he can—through love letters apparently written by Christian. Synetic Theater will apply their unique physical storytelling – and a stylistic twist – to this commedia-inspired wordless adaptation of Cyrano. This production runs 90 minutes without intermission.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream- Synetic enters the magical world on the wooded outskirts of Shakespeare’s Athens with a joyous, energetic and delightfully seductive adaptation of one of the Bard’s most renowned comedies - a fantastical, darkly playful game of love, mistaken identity and the supernatural. A Midsummer Night’s Dream features ethereal choreography, slapstick humor, colorful supernatural beings (and the divine tumbling bouts between them), all set to original music that swings from the otherworldly to ragtime comedy. This production runs 90 minutes without intermission.

In-school Touring Production:
The Magical Balloon - Expressed through body and facial masks, pantomime illusions, and unique choreography, The Miraculous Magical Balloon tells a wonderful story of a traveling actor and his magical trunk of tricks and toys. Originally created by Georgian physical theater artist Paata Tsikurshvili when he was a teenager and bringing him to national acclaim, The Miraculous Magical Balloon continues to enthrall a new generation of young audiences. And the whole audience gets to be involved!
Run time: 45 Minutes

Educational Programming

Synetic workshops get students up on their feet and keeps their imaginations engaged. With an emphasis on the Five C’s - Critical Thinking, Collaboration, Communication, Creative Thinking, and Citizenship our workshops & residencies are perfect for both theater and non-theater classes.

Workshops:
Synetic 101- What is physical theater? How can we communicate without words? Can you build walls from thin air and climb mountains that aren’t there? Students will use creative thinking and collaboration as they learn all of these skills and more. This workshop is an introduction to the processes and styles that make Synetic accessible and fun!
Synetic Shakespeare -Synetic has achieved international acclaim with its wordless Shakespeare Series and now we share our innovative methods with you! Using Shakespeare’s stories students will examine the themes of classic plays and how it relates to our world. Watch as your students physicalize the stories of Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, or Macbeth all while gaining a deeper understanding of the text.
Emotion in Motion - With an emphasis on Social-Emotional learning Emotion in Motion uses natural and improvised movements to exhibit the joy, the rage, the madness, the love, the conflicted internal life of a character. Students will be led through a variety of activities involving coordination, plasticity, and acceleration to unlock deeper more realized expression through movement.
Arts Integration - Looking for a new approach in the classroom? Trying to find a fresh way to engage students? Want to develop a new curriculum based project but you’re out of ideas? Let us do the work for you with our Arts Integration Residency! Arts Integration uses Project-based Learning to engage and challenge students. It is a perfect addition to any STEAM classroom.

Residencies:
