ABOUT

Mark Campbell's fiddle and banjo playing awakes and inspires Virginians to appreciate and perpetuate their musical traditions. Mark partners with The Campbell Family Band or The Virginia Roots Ensemble for more extensive performance options.

CONCERTS

Solo Concert In this 90-minute solo performance, Master Fiddler Mark Campbell demonstrates and traces historic tunes composed and carried by settlers into the mountain frontiers in the era before bluegrass.

The Campbell Family Band gives a 2-hour performance which demonstrates early Southern Highland string band music: solo fiddle pieces, singing with banjo and fiddle/banjo duets. Mark’s wife Martha Gravett plays church bass, daughter Molly plays mandolin and banjo, and daughter Mauren plays guitar and sings.

The Virginia Roots Ensemble explores the music of bygone Virginia musicians. Based on the Library of Virginia’s exhibition, Virginia Roots Music: Creating and Conserving Tradition, the 2-hour multi-media presentation highlights photographs and recordings of the 1920s and 1930s. The concert features musical traditions of the Old Dominion, especially the jubilee-style gospel quartets of Tidewater Virginia, string-band music of southwestern Virginia, and Piedmont or East Coast blues.
