Three Appointments to the Virginia Commission for the Arts Board

Governor Bob McDonnell has made three appointments to the board of the Virginia Commission for the Arts.
The Commission welcomes Pat Perry of Norfolk and Charles Ellis of Danville as new members of the board and
Sharron Kitchen Miller of Newport News, who has been reappointed.

New Commissioners

Charles G. Ellis of Danville was the Music Director of the Danville Symphony Orchestra from 2000 to 2010
and is now the Conductor Emeritus. From 1956 to 1970 Mr. Ellis led a sixteen piece dance band and a jazz
quintet, performing throughout Virginia and North Carolina. He is formerly the Band and Choral Director of Dan
River High School. He has served on the board of the Danville Concert Association. He is currently Chairman of
the City of Danville Airport Commission. A native of Hopewell, he is a graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University.

Patricia Walker Perry of Norfolk was named Outstanding Individual Philanthropist of Hampton Roads in 2010. A
native of North Carolina, she has served on the boards of the Virginia Stage Company, the Foundation for the
Preservation of Virginia's Executive Mansion, United Way of South Hampton Roads, Samaritan House and Safe
Harbour, and St. Mary's Home for Disabled Children. A graduate of Old Dominion University, she
served on the Board of Visitors of Old Dominion University from 1997 to 2002 and on the Governor's Advisory Board for Child
Abuse and Neglect. She is married to J. Douglas Perry, Founder and past Chairman/CEO of Dollar Tree Stores.

Sharron Kitchen Miller is a native of Newport News. A retired pediatric administrator, community leader, and
volunteer, she has served on the Newport News Department of Public Works Citizens Advisory Board and the
USS Newport News Liaison Committee. She has worked for the Christopher Newport University Foundation as a
major gifts officer and Director of the Parents Council. She is also a long time volunteer fundraiser for the
Hampton Roads Chapter of the American Red Cross. A strong advocate for children and the arts, she has worked
to fund organizations that expose young people to the visual and performing arts. She was originally appointed
to fill an unexpired term on the board of the Virginia Commission for the Arts in 2009 by Governor Tim Kaine and
has now been appointed to a full five year term.
