New Commissioners Appointed
Governor Timothy Kaine has appointed three new members to the board of the Virginia Commission for the Arts for five year terms.
Maria Laqueur moved from northern Virginia to Weems on the Northern Neck in 1996. She is the Vice President of the Rappahannock Foundation for the Arts and is responsible for booking the annual performing arts series in Lancaster County. Prior to moving to the Northern Neck, she worked as Executive Director of the Association of Part Time Professionals, as the U. S. Marketing Director of Bemrose UK Ltd, and in various positions at the Library of Congress. She has served on the performing arts touring advisory panel of the Commission.
Nicholas J. Covatta, Jr. of Accomac is Chairman of Atlantis Investors, which controls equipment sales/leasing/rental companies in Virginia and Maryland. In addition, he is the Managing Director of The Eastern Shore Nursery, a wholesale grower of landscape ornamental plants. He is the President of the North Street Playhouse in Onancock and was on the Area VI regional advisory panel of the Commission for three years. He is also an amateur stage actor but feels it necessary to keep his day job.
Vaughan Webb of Rocky Mount is the Assistant Director of the Blue Ridge Institute of Ferrum College. He has written extensively, produced television series and recordings, curated exhibitions, and lectured on Virginia folk traditions. He is knowledgeable about African-American music, the decorative arts of southwest Virginia and the Shenandoah Valley, musical instruments, and crafts. He has been an advisory panelist for the Commission.
The three new members of the Commission replace E. A. McMath, Gary Grant, and Roddy Moore, whose terms on the Commission ended June 30th.
