Carolyn Kreiter Named New Virginia State Poet Laureate
RICHMOND, June 26, 2006
Carolyn Kreiter–Foronda of Middlesex County has been named Virginia Poet Laureate by Governor Timothy Kaine. The Poet Laureate is an honorary position created to promote greater appreciation for the writing and reading of poetry throughout the state.
Ms. Kreiter-Foronda is a poet, painter, sculptor, and lifelong educator. Her publications include four books of verse, articles on writing, and book chapters on poetry and thinking skills. She has received three Pushcart Prize nominations and an Edgar Allen Poe first place award for her poetry. She has worked in schools and communities across the state through grants awarded by the Virginia Commission for the Arts. In 1992 she was named a Virginia Cultural Laureate for her contributions to American literature.
Ms. Kreiter–Foronda grew up in Pulaski County and moved to Richmond as a teenager. She graduated from Mary Washington College before moving to Washington where she taught and continued her education at George Mason University. Her next book, entitled Slash of Crimson in River County, has been inspired by her concern for the environment in Middlesex County.
One of Ms. Kreiter-Foronda’s goals as Virginia Poet Laureate is to promote other poets, and she is developing a website. The website will include information about good but lesser-known poets. The website address will be www.carolynforonda.com.
