Finalists Competing to Represent Virginia in Poetry Out Loud: National Recitation Contest

Ten High School Students from Richmond, VA, area to Compete at regional final of Poetry Out Loud: National Recitation Contest

The participating schools include Huguenote High School, St. Christopher's School, Meadowbrook High School, Matoaca High School, Benedictine High School, John Marshall High School, George Wythe High School for the Arts, Deep Run High School, and the Richmond Arts & Humanities Center.

The Richmond Regional Final, open to the public, will take place at the Library of Virginia, April 20, 2006 at 1:00 pm. Reception following.

The contest will be judged by David Wojahn, Professor of English and Poetry, Virginia Commonwealth University; Bruce Miller, Artistic Director, Theatre IV/Barksdale; Natasha Tretheway, Poet and currently Writer in Residence at the Duke Center for Documentary Studies and Mary Flinn, Director of the New Virginia Review.

Prizes at the state level include $200 and an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, DC, (with a chaperone) to compete for the national championship. The state winner's school will receive a $500 stipend for the purchase of poetry books. One runner-up in each state will receive $100, with $200 for his or her school library.
