Governor Kaine Announces Arts Awards

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
January 22, 2008

Governor’s Awards to be presented in September
-RICHMOND-

Governor Timothy M. Kaine today announced that the Governor’s Awards for the Arts will be presented in September 2008. This will be the fourth presentation of the awards since 1979. Former Virginia First Lady Jeannie Baliles will serve as chair.

“These awards will recognize excellence in the arts and honor those who encourage, support and invest in the arts in Virginia,” said Governor Kaine. “I am very pleased to be a part of this opportunity to celebrate the contribution of the arts to the quality of life in Virginia, and I am delighted that Jeannie Baliles will serve as Chair of the 2008 Awards.”

Following an open nomination process conducted throughout the Commonwealth, a distinguished panel of judges will select ten award recipients representing different regions of the state and different categories of arts contributions. Award recipients will be honored in September at a private reception at the Governor’s Mansion, followed by a celebration in the Capitol Rotunda.

The Virginia Governor’s Awards for the Arts have been presented only three times, first by Governor John Dalton in 1979, by Governor Charles Robb in 1985 and most recently in 2000 by Governor Jim Gilmore.

Area coordinators will assist in making nominations, promoting the awards and planning local celebrations to honor winners and nominees. Virginians for the Arts Foundation will coordinate the award process.

The announcement came during the Art Works Conference. All funds to support the awards program were raised through private donations.
