Susan Hirschbiel Wins "Creative Leadership in the Arts" Award
On November 14, 2010the Cultural Alliance of Greater Hampton Roads recognized Susan Hirschbiel of Virginia Beach with a first-ever award for “Creative Leadership in the Arts” .
This Award recognizes the expanding reach of the arts industry and honors extraordinary effort and achievement – not only in Hampton Roads, but throughout Virginia. The citation acknowledges someone whose extensive activities locally, regionally and statewide, enhance the value that all arts and cultural organizations offer their communities on a daily basis.
Susan B. Hirschbiel leads the charge in expanding the reach of arts and creativity. She not only works tirelessly in Hampton Roads for a multitude of diverse organizations, but also this past year she served as Statewide Chair for “Minds Wide Open: Virginia Celebrates Women in the Arts.” This initiative had the following results: 10,123 individual performances or exhibitions, almost 700 separate events produced as part of the celebration, with print and broadcast messages in the many thousands.
Anywhere that children and creativity come together, Susan B. Hirschbiel is there. Her contributions have a wide reach. As board president of the Virginia Arts Festival, Susan provided leadership for the Festival’s “Next Stage” campaign, successfully raising the funds for the exciting new Festival building in downtown Norfolk. She has also served as Chair of the Business Consortium for the Arts and was appointed by Governor Mark Warner for a five year term on the Virginia Commission for the Arts, serving from 2004 to 2009. For the past three years Susan chaired the statewide “Minds Wide Open” campaign. Her hands-on leadership resulted in an initiative that highlighted thousands of exhibitions and performances across the state. Susan remains steadfast in her commitment to improving the region’s quality of life through the arts. She personifies “Creative Leadership in the Arts.”
