2015 Poetry Out Loud

In 2015 Poetry Out Loud competitions were coordinated by the Virginia Commission for the Arts (VCA) who organized 5 regional competitions and 1 statewide final through partnerships with Virginia Education Association (VEA) and the Community Idea Station WCVE (Richmond), which made the taping and broadcasting of The Virginia Finals possible. The regional competitions in 2015 included representation of 36 school districts, 46 schools, and 50 school-wide champions. .

On, Friday, March 13, 2015, eleven regional winners from across the Commonwealth convened at the Community Idea Station WCVE (Richmond) to compete for the title of Poetry Out Loud Virginia State Champion and the opportunity to represent Virginia at the national competition taking place April 28-29, in Washington, DC. The state winner, Ahkei Togun of Tallwood High School (Virginia Beach) recited “The Way It Sometimes Is” by Henry Taylor, captivating the audience by his visually expressive interpretation. First runner-up was Isabelle Andrews of St. Catherine’s School (Richmond) and second runner-up was Ben Elliot of Grace Christian School (Staunton).

2014 Poetry Out Loud

Since 2005-2006 Virginia has participated in the Poetry Out Loud Program.  This program is a partnership between The National Endowment for the Arts and The Poetry Foundation.   Poetry Out Loud provides students the opportunity to develop public speaking skills through spoken word and delve into our rich literary heritage through analysis and interpretation.

In 2014 Poetry Out Loud competitions were coordinated and administered by partnering organizations Theatre IV and Barksdale Theater. Over 7,368 students participated across the state through school competitions, 7 regional competitions and 1 statewide final competition. This includes the representation of 30 school districts, 46 schools, and 53 school-wide champions.  Following the state finals, the national finals were held in Washington, DC, on April 29 and April 30, 2014.

Over 8,319 students participated across the state through school competitions, 8 regional competitions and 1 statewide final competition. This includes the representation of 20 school districts, 53 schools, and 83 school-wide champions. Following the state finals, the National Finals were held in Washington, DC, on April 29 and April 30, 2013.

In 2012 Poetry Out Loud competitions were coordinated and administered by partnering organizations Theatre IV and Barksdale Theater. Over 12,000 students participated across the state through school competitions, 8 regional competitions and 1 statewide final competition. Following the state finals, the National Finals were held in Washington, DC, May 13-15, 2012.

2011 Poetry Out Loud

Thank you, Virginia’s 2011 Poetry Out Loud: National Recitation Contest participating teachers and high school students! This year 227 teachers and 8,653 high school students participated in Poetry Out Loud holding recitation contests in their classrooms and schools and advancing their school champion to the regional contests throughout the commonwealth.

Of the 76 school champions competing in the regional contests, 16 regional finalists advanced to the State Final in Richmond at Theatre IV's historic Empire Theatre on March 17, 2011. After three rounds of poetry recitation, Carol V. Decker of Tuscarora High School in Leesburg, Loudoun County was declared the highest scoring student and Virginia's 2011 Poetry Out Loud State Champion. Her teacher and coach is Karen Kosbob. Colleen Murphy of William Monroe High School in Greene County was declared State Runner-Up. Her teacher and coach is William Hughes. Following the state finals, the National Finals were held in Washington, DC, on April 28 and April 29, 2011
