Arts Marketing Institute
The Arts Marketing Institute, a project of the California Arts Council (funded through the Lila Wallace-Readers Digest START Program), works to raise public awareness of the value of the arts and to increase public participation in the arts in the state of California. Books, articles, studies and links to other web sites with arts marketing ideas can be found on this site.

CPANDA: Cultural Policy &The Arts National Data Archive
Launched by Princeton University Library and Princeton University's Center for Arts and Cultural Policy Studies, CPANDA is an interactive, web-accessible digital archive of policy-relevant data on culture and the arts. The CPANDA initiative is designed to help policymakers, journalists, scholars and others gain easy access both to current research findings and to previously hard-to-find data on the arts, including public opinion on the arts, city-specific data and recently released statistics.

A New Angle: Arts Development in the Suburbs
This report explores the growing commitment to the arts in the Minneapolis-St.Paul suburbs, as well as the history status and direction of suburban arts activity. Published by the McKnight Foundation, the report mixes statistics with case studies. The study is available online.

Heritage Preservation's Cataclysm and Challenge: Impact of September 11, 2001, on Our Nation's Cultural Heritage (pdf format)
This 26-page report offers the first comprehensive study of what was lost -- both in Lower Manhattan and at the Pentagon. The report highlights findings obtained from a survey conducted in the months immediately following September 11, that included museums, librariers, archives and other collecting institutions in Lower Manhattan. It reveals significant lessons that may help protect our nation's cultural heritage from future disasters. A copy of the report is online.

Economic Impact of Arts and Cultural Organizations in Virginia (pdf format)

PARC: The Value of the Performing Arts in Five Communities
Conducted by the Performing Arts Research Coalition (PARC), the study published in 2003 found that in Alaska, Cincinnati, Denver, Pittsburgh, and Seattle the performing arts attract a large, diverse audience and enjoy broad support. 

RAND's 30 Year Study: The Performing Arts in a New Era
RAND, a nonprofit research organization, conducted a 30 year study of the performing arts system in America entitled The Performing Arts in a New Era. The study was underwritten by The Pew Charitable Trusts, as part of its 5-year initiative"Optimizing America's Cultural Resources."

The Arts and Academic Improvement: What the Evidence Shows

Harvard University's Project Zero conducted the first comprehensive and quantitative study of what the research on academic outcomes of arts education really shows. Studies from 1950-1999 (published and unpublished, and appearing in English) that have tested the claim that studying the arts leads to some form of academic improvement were reviewed.

Americans for the Arts YouthARTS Handbook
To provide practical resources and best practices to help communities and organizations build successful after-school programs, Americans for the Arts has made the successful publication YouthARTS® Handbook: Arts Programs for Youth at Risk available online. The now out-of-print YouthARTS® Handbook gave schools and communities detailed information on how to plan, run, and provide training and evaluation for after-school programs.  With funding provided by the MetLife Foundation, the YouthARTS® Toolkit Online, launched in May 2003, making it possible for these valuable resources to be available beyond the life of the Handbook.

Critical Links: Learning in the Arts and Student Academic and Social Development
"Critical Links" is a compendium of arts education research released by the Arts Education Partnership.  The Compendium is a compilation of reviews of 62 studies focusing on arts learning in dance, drama, music, visual arts and multiple arts disciplines.  It includes five interpretive essays that examine the implications of the body of studies in each of these areas.  An overview essay explores the issue of the transfer of learning from the arts to other academic and social outcomes.  Funding for the Compendium has been provided by the National Endowment for the Arts and the U.S. Department of Education.  Critical Links brings together a group of studies focused on understanding the cognitive capacities used and developed in learning and practicing the arts and the relationship of these capacities to a students’ academic performance as well as to their social interactions and development.  The report may be downloaded.

National Governors Association Report: The Impact of Arts Education on Workforce Preparation
A 2002 report by the National Governors Association (NGA) demonstrates how the arts help build a highly skilled 21st century workforce. The Impact of Arts Education on Workforce Preparation documents the positive outcomes of integrating the arts into education and youth intervention programs. Prepared by the NGA's Center for Best Practices in consultation with the National Assembly of State Arts Agencies (NASAA), the report describes how economic vitality depends on a highly educated and creative workforce. Findings from current research linking the arts and learning are highlighted, as are examples of innovative arts programs across the country.

Connecting with the Arts: A Teaching Practices Library, Grades 6-8
This video library features a variety of meaningful arts integration approaches taking place in middle school classrooms around the country. It includes 12 half-hour video programs, a library guide, and a Web site.

Education Commission of the States Releases Report on the Arts in Education Today
